Real world mpg?

I am getting around 15-16 on mix driving (local and highways). Wish tank could hold 22-25 gallons.
Really disappointing. I’ve heard a few people say similar. Was really hoping to see the 20 combined they are advertising. My wife’s Lexus hybrid is nearly spot on their estimates.

Let me share something I am observing. I now have about 1,500 miles on my Overtrail. I have observed the hybrid taking over more frequently. Going down a hill, the engine turns off and the hybrid manages it all, going under 20 mph, the same. The hybrid has become more active over time. My guess is that the car goes through a calibration/optimization process.

That's interesting, so hopefully the mileage gets a bit better over time.

Currently at 600miles driving 50% city and 50% highway. Getting around 12.5 mpg. Was about to go to the dealership before reading the comments here. I’ve been trying the different drive modes to see if anything made mpg better. Going to wait until 1K and reset the mpg trip. I’m assuming it’s a breaking in calibration with so few mile on both engine and battery. Also, the hybrid battery has never reached a full charge as far as I can tell. Really hoping it improves. Disappointed with the gas tank size and range. Previous suv I would get 525 miles per fill up. Overtrail is about 230 mile range with fill up.

I have observed that the battery wants to stay charged in the 40-70% range. This allows it to both absorb and discharge energy as needed. When I have taken it to 100% by for example decending down a mountain for a few miles. the car jumps to then using the battery a lot to consume the saved energy. To get optimum milage, resist the urge to use the incredible power at your disposal by not accelerating too fast.

With almost 6k miles, three 800 mile long haul trips, no towing, and mixed city/highway driving we are seeing ~19.5 mi/gal.

Did you notice a difference in MPG after the motor was broken in, say, 2000 to 3000 miles?

We did not. We saw a gradual increase in MPG until we got to 19.5, and now it dances around this number; sometimes a little more, sometimes a little less. We also don't notice much electric only operation.

What caused the gradual increase... I wonder if that's just the motor breaking in?

I am at 3000 miles. I have not seen much of a change since new. Maybe 1 mile per gallon difference. Most of my driving is local/city with lots of elevation ups and downs. I am getting 16.9 average at the moment. Also should mention I mostly drive in the Sport+ mode.

Sounds like you might have a heavy foot too! :)

9k miles. Eco mode over 90% of time. Comfort mode only during long haul family trips. Always 18mpg. No mpg change since new.

That's slightly disappointing. I would have hoped for at least 1+ MPG increase after break in. I guess these newer motors really are pretty much broken in from the factory.

How can you tell the state of charge of the hybrid battery?

10,000 miles...........
Highway...Normal Mode...Normal AHC...20-21.5 MPG even in the mountains...up and down, etc.
Around Town...Normal Model...Normal AHC (50%) and Hi1 AHC (50%)...17-19 MPG

*I consistantly have a range of 300+ miles all the time. Better than any of our last 3 Cruisers with 24.5 gallon tanks. NO complaints from us on the 17.9 gallon tank.

*I cannot understand the post of 12.5 MPG unless towing or some wierd situation. Even when we hang around town for several days and drive thru for breakfast then sit and listen to a podcast for an hour...we'll get 14 on that tank. Now that we'll not need air conditioning any more for months I'll expect 17 in this scenario. Engine and A/C never run...all hybrid electric, thus no mileage reduction.
